J!-E!-T!-S! Thoughts! Thoughts! Thoughts!
First off, sorry for the 6-month layoff. Living in Denver and writing about New York sports proved to be an insurmountable challenge for half a year.
Watching the Jets smash Bronco hearts yesterday, a bunch of thoughts ran through my beady little mind, namely:
1) Antonio Cromartie may have fathered three orphanages, but he's a damn good cover corner.
Cromartie and the Jets' pass defense, which came into yesterday's game ranked 23rd in the NFL, managed to do what no other team has done against the Broncos this year: hold Denver QB under 300 yards passing. Thanks to Darrelle Revi$ and Cromartie especially, no Bronco receiver had space to haul in catches like they normally do.
Cromartie looked especially great to me. Brandon Lloyd couldn't find any space all day against Cromartie, and Lloyd went into yesterday's game as the NFL's leader in receiving yards. Conor tells me that Cromartie is possibly the Jets' MVP so far this year, and it's hard to argue with him after Cromartie's lockdown performance against Lloyd and the horsies Sunday.
2) Credit to Mark Sanchize.
On the play that decided Sunday's game, everybody picked on Bronco safety Renaldo Hill for not turning his back and for grabbing Santonio Holmes' face mask. True. But where's the love for Marky Mark?
Mark was about to get sacked on a desperation 4th and 6, yet Sanchez found the one guy that was on one-on-one coverage. In a bad spot, Sanchez gave his team the best chance to win by throwing to the right spot. It really looks like he's growing up and making smart decisions in key spots, and he also pretty quickly shook off a horrendous first quarter Sunday as well.
3) LaDanian looks damn good.
I'm aware this isn't breaking news in New York, but after LT look like an old man the past two years in San Diego, it's breaking news to me. Namely, LT's cutting ability and quickness appear to be rejuvenated. The Broncos held Tomlinson to 55 yards rushing, but the Broncos gang-tackled and over-committed to the run to do so.
My Dad told me the Jets are his Super Bowl pick. Wouldn't go that far yet, but yesterday's win is the type of game that Super Bowl-caliber teams win. The Broncos played their orange little hearts out, meanwhile the Jets mostly played like poo on a short week a Mile High on the West coast, yet gang green still found a way. Call me greedy, but I want to see the Jets beat the Dolphins and Pats one more time each before I call them my Super Bowl pick. But they look good.
Time to go eat some Goddamn snacks.
