Uh, whatcha doin' Jets?

They say in sports it's best to get part ways with a productive player before . Well, the Jets are putting that theory to the test after they cut star lineman Alan Faneca and opting to draft a lineman (Vladimir Ducasse, UMass) instead.

It's a risky move. Faneca's the most decorated star on an offensive line that most credit with being the backbone of the Jets' success last season, and you're replacing him with a rookie from a small school who reportedly struggled defending pass rushers in the Senior Bowl. Looks like the Sanchize might be running from pass rushers a little more next season.

But sometimes, cold, tough decisions are necessary, and I think this is one of them. It's better to have gotten rid of a top player before he hits his decline than after, and the Jets are certainly thinking the 33-year-old Faneca is going to be more ineffective and overpaid sooner rather than later.

Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum seems to have a good eye for draft talent (he's drafted Kerry Rhodes, Nick Mangold, David Harris, Darelle Revis, Vernon Ghoulson....oh wait. Can't ace every pick) and with the move, the Jets will be saving a lot of money on Faneca's $40 million deal.

I say have faith in Tannenbaum- he's built a hell of an organization in the four years he's been in charge. On paper, this is one of those moves that makes you go "What the hell!", but if this Ducasse guy is a good player (Jets o-line coach Bill Callahan is highly regarded, so he's in a good position to succeed), the Jets will be saving money and have a long-term solution at the position.

You go, Tannenbaum.
