The Numbers Don't Lie...

Baseball is a game of numbers.  Individual numbers.  Who's better than who--in some sports, you really have to see the game with your own eyes to answer that question.  In baseball, a good observation of the stats can tell a whole lot of the story.

Personally, I like when that numbers story gets...a little out of whack.  We are approximately one week into a six-month season.  If you look at the statistics now, there's a good chance that there's a few eyebrow raisers here and there.  A great player may slump early on and a Rey Ordonez-level sucky hitter may rake it out of the gate.  Of course, things should level back to the norm as the season progresses.  But for now, we'll have a little fun with it.  Here are my favorite, 100% true statements regarding the 2010 season so far...
  • Jeff Francoeur leads the Mets and is in the league's top-5 with a .476 batting average.  Angel Pagan is the only other Met regular hitting over .300.  On the other side, three opening day starters (Castillo, Jacobs, Matthews Jr.) are all on the wrong side of .170
  • But hey, things are going GREAT for Mets pitchers at the plate.  Perez and Pelfrey are ripping the ball at a furious .500 average, while Santana is no slouch at .333.  With such sluggers on the mound, how in the world could they be 2-4??
  • The Yankee regulars are keeping pace with the Mets pitchers, as the pinstripes feature 4 guys hitting .333 or better.
  • Curtis Granderson has double the home runs as David Wright and Jason Bay combined.
  • Albert Pujols is taking some of the fun out of this activity.  He leads the majors in homers and runs batted in, which is a surprise to 0.7% of baseball fans.
  • While we're on the topic of non-surprises, David Ortiz leads the league with 11 strikeouts...
  • Halladay who?  Big Roy may be impressive with his 2 wins and sub-1.00 ERA for Philly.  But he can't hold a candle to immortal Blue Jays reliever Casey Janssen, who leads the majors with 3 wins.
  • The real kicker?  Janssen has collected three wins on only three innings pitched so far this year.
  • The top 3 saves leaders in week 1?  Jon Rauch, Jasor Frasor, and Matt Capps.  What round did you draft those guys in your fantasy draft?
Well that's all I can find for now.  Hope that was good for a chuckle or two.  That's the numbers story through week one of the season.  But it's far too early to pass judgment on anyone.  Unless you support the Mets...in which case it seems like the sky is on fire after 6 games.  I picked them to make the World Series, people!  Isn't that enough to ease your minds?

Jeez...

I believe this factoid will remain true all season, because Jeff Francoeur is cute and he once appeared (prematurely) on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
