Hello There, Blog World!
A very hearty welcome to sports fans everywhere! My name is Conor Reilly, and yes the rumors are true of my existence. I will be helping out Mr. Bianchi with this here blog, starting of course with my own picks for this week. Chris has done a fantastic job in explaining what we hope to accomplish with this blog. And before I get to the picks, I'd like to build upon his explanation of our goals...
First off, we both know that sports is meant to be a good time. It is a blissful escape from a sometimes-chaotic world. Chris and I have known each other for many years now. Does we scream at the top of our lungs when our favorite teams hit a walk-off home run? Absolutely. Do we go on profanity-laced tirades when our quarterbacks throw intereptions? You bet your ass! Sports has the unbelievable ability to mean everything while also meaning nothing. For me, I sit here at age 22 and none of my teams (Mets, Jets, Knicks, Islanders) have won a championship in my lifetime. Would anything really be different if any or all my teams had ever won? Maybe something here or there. Maybe I would have a slightly-less bitter attitude toward certain things in life. But in the grand scheme of things...I would probably still be a 22 year old writing this blog to entertain you guys. It's just the way sports work: time heals all wounds. (Unless you're a fan of the Yankees or Patriots. In which case you have no wounds. And you should never, ever complain about your team's misfortunes for the rest of your life. Did I mention I was bitter about some things? Ok, good.) And who knows...without all the dissappointment I've experienced, maybe it would be impossible to achieve the accepting, laid-back persona that makes sports blogs like this possible.
So no, sports are not the end-all, be-all in life. But they sure are fun to talk about. A debate about sports can be just as passionate and fiery as a political debate. Everyone has an opinion, and they're dying to get it out there. As our readers, you will come to know me and Chris' opinions very well. The best thing about blogs like these is that everyone can get their voices heard. If you have a thought, please throw it in the comments section. If it agrees with me or Chris, it should make for a good column. If it disagrees with us, it should make for a great column.
So let's have some fun with this. We know you're not going to come here to check final scores or breaking news. There are other media outlets that have more workers and way, way, WAY more money than us that provide such information. No, you're going to come here for sports opinions from diehard fans in their 20's that won't hold any punches. We know our niche. Sports is meant to be entertaining, and we will try and find the perfect balance of humor in our writing.
We invite you all to come along for the ride. Who knows, maybe one day you'll see our dopey faces on ESPN or in a newspaper. And you'll say, "I was following those dopes from the start!" Whether that happens or not is yet to be seen. But this is where the road begins. It should be a hell of a trip.
